Clean Air, Stronger Schools: A New Grant Opportunity to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Clean air isn’t just a facilities issue—it’s a learning issue. Growing research continues to show that indoor air quality plays a critical role in student health, attendance, and academic performance. When classrooms have cleaner air, students are better able to focus, teachers miss fewer days, and schools create safer, more supportive learning environments for everyone inside the building.

To help school districts take meaningful action, the National School Boards Association (NSBA), in partnership with the Go Green Initiative, is launching a new EPA-funded opportunity focused on improving indoor air quality in schools. Through this competitive program, ten school districts will be selected to receive up to $45,000 in grant funding, along with indoor air quality monitors and hands-on technical support. The goal is simple but powerful: give schools the tools, data, and expertise they need to make informed decisions that lead to healthier classrooms.

This opportunity is designed to support districts that often face the greatest challenges. Eligible applicants include school districts where at least 50 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, as well as districts serving Tribal communities. Selected districts will not only receive funding and monitoring equipment, but also training and expert guidance to help interpret air quality data and implement effective, long-term improvements.

Applications are due by February 27, 2026, and interest is expected to be high. For districts looking to strengthen student well-being, support staff, and invest in healthier learning spaces, this program represents a timely and impactful opportunity.
