Green CA Schools and Higher Education Summit

Welcome Remarks
Carla Grandy is the Senior Advisor on Climate and Lead Climate Fellow with the California Community College Chancellor’s Office. Carla has 17 years of experience in the California Community College System. Carla began her career as faculty, teaching a range of Earth Science courses from geology and oceanography to climate change and environmental monitoring. Carla served as the coordinator for the Energize Colleges Program at Skyline College, connecting students with paid internships in green economy jobs. As faculty lead and then Director of Guided Pathways, Carla led the campus-wide implementation of Guided Pathways, including the creation of a thematic general education pathway focused on environmental sustainability. As Dean of STEM and Vice President of Instruction, Carla supported faculty and staff to climatize curriculum across disciplines and programs and to connect with community partners and create opportunities for real-world experiences for students. In her current role, Carla supports California Community College Chancellor’s Office Vision 2030 goals to advance community college engagement with the four fields of climate practice: facilities and operations, workforce and curriculum, community engagements and benefits, and resource development.
Keynote Panel Moderator
Jonathan Klein is co-founder and CEO of UndauntedK12 working to support America’s public schools to make an equitable transition to zero carbon emissions while preparing youth to build a sustainable future in a rapidly changing climate. His work at UndauntedK12 has been recognized with a fellowship from the Emerson Collective and the McNulty Catalyst Prize within the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He is also a co-founder of GO Public Schools, Revolution Foods, and the Oakland Public Education Fund. Jonathan has experience teaching and working within large urban school districts, and has led campaigns to change policy, elect equity-focused leaders, and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in new resources for children and public schools throughout the country.
Jonathan received an MBA from UC Berkeley and also lectured there on nonprofit leadership and management. He is a fully credentialed teacher and received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University. Jonathan lives with his wife and two children in Oakland where he coaches little league baseball. He was radicalized around the climate crisis while chaperoning middle schoolers at a youth-led climate strike in September 2019.
Keynote Panelists
Tamara Wallace is the Senior Manager for the Energy, Sustainability, and Transportation unit within the California State University Office of the Chancellor, which is the systemwide office supporting the 23-campus system. During her nearly 15-year career in sustainability and climate action, Tamara’s work in carbon reduction and climate resilience has been action-oriented through partner-building and implementation strategies. She is the team lead for the emerging Climate Action Grants Program, pursuing external funds prioritizing carbon reduction and campus resilience campus infrastructure projects.
Tamara is an elected member and current chair of AASHE’s STARS Steering Committee. She promotes access to climate research and literacy for all as a co-founder and Managing Editor for the CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change open access publication and is a sitting member of the statewide Executive Committee for the Environmental and Climate Change Literacy Projects (ECCLPS) CSU-UC partnership.
As Chief Eco-Sustainability Officer for the Los Angeles Unified School District, Christos Chrysiliou is responsible for visioning, development and implementation of sustainability and energy initiatives with the goal of reducing the District’s carbon and water footprint, increasing campus greening, and promoting climate literacy. Prior to this position, Christos served as the Director of Architecture and Engineering (A&E) Services for over a decade with the Facilities Services Division of the LAUSD. He has been at the forefront of LAUSD’s efforts to promote sustainable design practices, the clean energy and decarbonization transition, campus ecology and healthier, more eco-friendly school environments.
Kelley Lê has been in the educational field for over 15 years as a high school science educator, instructional coach, and educational leader. She is the inaugural Executive Director of the UC–CSU Environmental and Climate Change Literacy Projects (ECCLPs), former director of the UC Irvine Science Project, Friends of the Planet NCSE Award recipient (2022), and author of Teaching Climate Change for Grades 6-12: Activating Science Teachers to Take on the Climate Crisis Through NGSS (2021; 2024).
She also serves as a CLEAN advisory board member, LEVERS advisory board member, Climate Reality Corps mentor, and former Ten Strands board member.
Eric Driever has been the Principal Architect at the Division of the State Architect HQ /Codes and Standards since October 2021, he is responsible for management of DSA access, fire/life safety and sustainability programs, for regulation development and interpretation for CALGreen for schools and for CBC Chapter 11B Access Code. As the Principal Architect he is also responsible for oversight of the CASp Program and the Executive Director of the Historical Building Safety Board.
Eric has 9 years prior experience as Senior and Supervising Architect with the Department of General Services/RESD and managing the Access Barrier Removal Program, in addition to responsibilities as Senior and Supervising Architect. Eric Driever has 15 years’ prior experience in private architectural firms focused on schools and other commercial projects.
