ABCs of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing

This is an introduction to Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) in the context of California state procurements. The EPP program is a part of the overall procurement process in the Department of General Services. To support the state in procuring goods and services that have a lesser impact on the environment, we write specifications that include EPP criteria. These are often mandatory, so this session will go over how to identify our requirements and provide the documentation we need in order for verification.

Learners should attend if they plan on contracting with DGS for statewide contracts. EPP requirements are often found on these solicitations and are mandatory. It’s important to identify them within the solicitation package and understand what it is we are asking to be submitted with bids for verification.

With over 12 years of experience in sustainable procurement, Ian has become a leading voice in Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) for the State of California. As a Procurement Engineer, Ian has spearheaded the development and implementation of EPP and State Agency Buy Recycled Campaign (SABRC) functionality in state’s financial information systems, ensuring that sustainability is seamlessly integrated into procurement processes.

Ian’s expertise extends to crafting EPP criteria for a diverse range of goods and services, developing training materials, and drafting sustainability related policies. Ian is dedicated to protecting human health, the environment, while promoting economic resiliency, innovation, and sustainability of the state’s purchasing power.

Ian is honored to present at the Sustainable Facilities Forum, where he will cover the principles of environmentally preferable purchasing within the state of California’s procurement processes.
